Stray Kids LIVE! Our first Kpop Concert

Stray-Kids-3

Stray Kids came to America! And we were thrilled to have gotten tickets to the May 16 2019 Performance in Newark (Stray Kids USA Tour 2019: Will You Be There?)

The show was immediately sold out and the band surprised fans by offering a second show for May 15 2019. This was their first ever consecutive performance and the band was so excited to have so much love and support from STAY.

Since we are out in Canada, Candace and I took the long treck to New York to see the concert- and it was worth every minute of the drive!

To get ourselves ready- we listened to their albums over and over…and over and over and over and over.

And so our Journey to New York Began.

New York City

We took the opportunity to vacation in New York City stopping by to see all the famous sights, sounds and tastes.

NYC style Pizza

After a day on the town, we returned to our hotel, only to discover that Stray Kids had visited Times Square within hours of our own sighting of it early that afternoon!

How we envy those lucky bystanders in the background who don’t even know what they missed! We had been keeping an eye out for Stray Kids all day- even though we only half believed that we could ever spot them- but as it turns out, we should have been looking harder!

Stray Kids Concert

61384892_575438019529211_8206847135811895296_n

When we arrived two hours before the concert- our fellow Kpop fans were already there, getting hyped up.

This was our very first kpop concert, so we didn’t quite know what to expect.

It really felt like home- being around other kpop fans and sharing our excitement!

One cannot describe what it was like the moment Stray Kids came onto the stage- it was- just the most amazing thing!

64d15f0b9dfe4bfcb7f535b8ac90de00

There was this dissonance between being able to actually physically see and be in the presence of people I’ve only ever seen on youtube. My brain told me it wasn’t possible- that they were on the other side of the world- and yet here they stood- right in front of me! Living, breathing, dancing , singing STRAY KIDS!

The screams were unbelievable- and while I never thought I would become a crazy fangirl and start tearing up my vocal chords- but I did, I just couldn’t help it.

For a detailed article on the concert click here.

The concert was the most phenomenal experience EVER, was worth every penny- and we are already planning our next concert…

To those doubters out there- ITS WORTH IT JUST GO at least once.

Drama Drop: The History behind ‘Hymn of Death’

the-hymn-of-death-1

Title: Hymn of Death 사의 찬미

Language: Korean

Episodes: 3

Release Date:November 27- December 4 2018

Starring: Lee Jong-Suk, Shin Hye-Sun

This Netflix original is short and sweet. With only three episodes, you can finish the drama in an evening- just be sure to grab a box of tissues and a cozy blanket before you begin!

The Plot

The story begins when Yun Sim-Deok a soprano singer, meets and falls in love with playwright Kim Woo-Jin wile at university. Things become complicated when Sim-Deok discovers that Woo-Jin has family commitments and responsibilities that do not allow them to be together. Fed up with their obligations, the two tragically decide to commit suicide (no spoilers here- that is literally how the show begins!)

True Story

While the incident is famous in Korea, not many westerners know the history behind the drama- and that it is based on a TRUE STORY.

jkl;.PNG

Yun Sim-Deok (윤심덕) is remembered as Korea’s first soprano singer.

Born in Pyongyang on July 25, 1897, Sim-Deok was privileged enough to study at Kyongsong Women’s Teaching College in Seoul 1914. Education for women at such a high level was unusual during the time. Sim-Deok was eager to further her studies and became the first Korean to study at the Tokyo Music School in Japan where she met Kim-Woo-Jin (김우진).

Sim-Deok had her first debut as a soprano in 1923 and while she was admired for her talent, she was unable to make a living by singing western classical music. This forced her to change course and sing pop and fold music in order to support herself.

She famously committed suicide with Kim-Woo-Jin on August 4, 1926 at the age of 29.

Sim-Doek’s most famous recording was “In Praise of Death” (the first Korean pop song) in 1926 that she recorded with her sister accompanying her on the piano. The piece is set to the tune “Waves on the Danube” by Ivanovici.

Here’s the original 1926  recording:

For comparison here’s a modern rendition of the song:

l;;;;pi.PNG

It is difficult to find details on the life of author Kim Woo-Jin in English.

No matter how hard I look, I can’t seem to find anything on him- though I would love to insert some of his writings here for you to read!

If you are interested in reading about Kim U-jin on Karel Capek you can find an article written by Sdenka Kloslova in Vol 32, Issue 1, Pg 84 of the Korea Journal

If you can understand Korean though- this documentary published in 1997 looking into his life may be helpful !

If you know or can access the history surrounding this author (or can translate) let us know! We would love to learn more about him!

The Period

I must admit that I am no expert in Korean history- if you were as confused as I was, I went and did some research for you, so here’s a little context for the Drama.

TLDR? Check out the highlighted sections for info directly relating to the Drama

  • Japan attempted to establish diplomatic relations with Korea which were refused. In frustration, Japan began considering war against Korea
  • Japan sent warships to threaten Korea to sign a treaty of commerce and friendship, which it did resulting in the opening of Busan, Wŏnsan, and Incheon to Japanese trade.
  • The increasing Japanese presence in Korea disturbed China who sent troops to Korea.
  • China then forced Korea to sign a trade agreement which led to similar treaties signed with the United states (1882), the UK, Germany, France and Russia who quickly established foreign missions in Seul.
  • This led to rapid modernization in Korea. Many officials and students were sent to the West, China and Japan to study technology and ideology to bring back to Korea.
  • After Japan’s victory in the Sino-Japanese War, the Treaty of Shimonoseki of April 1895 recognized Japanese hegemony in Korea.
  • Encouraged by Russia, the Korean government attempted to push out the Japanese
  • The Korean Emperor secretly sent an emissary to the International Peace Conference at the Hague in 1907 asking for help.  This plea was ignored however and by 1910, Japan dispersed the Korean army and took full possession of Korea
  • Japan set up their government in Korea. Koreans lost freedom of assembly, association of the press and the freedom of speech. The Japanese school system was enforced and as an attempt to assimilate Koreans, the Japanese language was forced onto the people while Korean language and Korean history were no longer allowed to be taught.
  • March 1 1919: The March First Movement, was a nationwide anti-Japanese peaceful protest in which approximately two million Koreans took part. The Japanese responded with brutal violence arresting 46,000 while 16,000 were wounded and 7,500 were killed.
  • Students and Intellectuals attempted to inspire the Korean people with ideals of patriotism and democracy. This was done through western-styled newspapers and through the creation of Korean novels and poems which grew in popularity
  • A big anti-Japanese Rally occurred again in Seoul in 1926
  • A Nationwide student uprising occurred in November 1929
  • Constant uprisings and WWII led to Korea’s independence in 1945 ending 35 years of Japanese rule.

The Romance

TO be honest, this Drama is EXTREMELY TAME. Don’t get your hopes up because there is one and only one kissing scene. While modesty is one of the charms of Kdrama- this one really builds up the chemistry and tension- and leaves you a little dissatisfied.

EVEN SO, it was a nice, short little drama that I really enjoyed.

I loved the struggles of the young author, and the history involved in the series.

I had a fun time and learned something new!

If you have an empty afternoon and are ready to shed a tear- this Drama is PERFECT !

Also, its on Netflix which is really convenient. Next time your browsing your suggestions, look it up!

Seventeen’s New Album ‘You Made My Dawn’

91RJ3MasgJL._SS500_

You Made My Dawn

Seventeen released their sixth mini album on January 25 2019 which includes six tracks.

  1. Good to Me
  2. Home (title)
  3.  Hug (포옹)
  4. Chilli (칠리)
  5. Shhh
  6. Getting Closer (숨이 차)

What does it Mean?

In an interview with Billboard in December 2018, the group was asked

What’s the meaning behind You Made My Dawn?

Joshua: The theme behind the album is the message of, “You made my darkness into dawn.” So basically, you know how dawn is between night and day? The sun comes in to make the night a little brighter and it progresses into day, right? That’s why we tried to compare the flow of emotions to the sun, and connect this album to the previous album You Make My Day.

How is this album related to You Make My Day?

Vernon: If you think of a story, [Dawn] should be like the prequel of You Make My Day. We want to give listeners a comfortable feel. You Make My Day was released in the summer, and this album’s going to be released in winter so obviously we want to match the seasons. Especially for this album, we tried to show more of our maturity. Just by listening to the sound and lyrics you can tell the difference from our previous albums with this album.

You released the song “Getting Closer” before the album’s release, and it’s quite different from “Home” stylistically. Why did the album’s release highlight these two songs in particular?

Joshua: Before this album came out we released “Getting Closer,” and the message we were trying to send was the condition one feels in the absence of love. “Home,” our title track, expresses the emotions felt when you’re in the presence of someone you love.

you can read the full interview here

Stats

The album reached No. 4 on Billboard’s World Album Chart in its first week, and earning one million on-demand US streams in the first week.

You Made my Dawn hit Heatseekers Albums Chart at number 13.

“Getting Closer” was the first of the tracks to be published on December 20 2018 as a teaser for the new album. This track did slightly better than the album’s title “Home”

To date, Seventeen’s most popular song was “Very Nice” which reached number 2 in 2016.

Their new release promises to keep them in the top ten.

Check out the details here

Home

The title track “Home” as well as “Good to Me” were composed by members Woozi, Bumzu and Seungkwan

You may already have seen that music video, but here’s an unofficial version of the song i’ll be you haven’t!

While I enjoyed the proper MV, this version featuring the guys in their pajamas is absolutely ADORABLE!!!!

Dancing with headbands, furry ears, sleep masks and sharing a toothbrush, these boys are just too cute.

Watch till the end- their snuggles should not be missed ❤

It been overlooked- but it really shouldn’t be!

So in love with Seventeen

Style

Seventeen continues to pursue EDM style in their songs such as “Home”. When asked “Why does this style suit Seventeen so much?” during a Billboard interview, the group answered:

Joshua: EDM is very suited for performances and dancing, so that’s why I think it suits us well. I think for every genre we try to make it into our own style.

Vernon: There are so many types of EDM, like songs that make you want to jump and get you all excited. But “Home” isn’t that kind of EDM, it’s like more comfortable to listen to.

Joshua: It’s mellow.

Vernon: We came up and practiced a performance that matches the song’s mellow mood. Yeah, we’re very satisfied with it.

Joshua: There’s a lyric that’s like, “We’ll be your home, and you’re our home. We’ll be your comfort, we’ll be the place you can cry alone, or the place you can love alone.” The place where you don’t have to care about what other people will think or say.

Vernon: Yea, it has a healing message, the song.

On Publishing:

As a bookworm, I absolutely love the publishing atmosphere and how important literature is to the characters within the drama.

While i’m usually not one to cry during dramas, my heart was torn to pieces when the publishing company takes its new employees to view the shredding process.

Their goal to have their books make a difference in the lives of their readers is beautiful.

Drama Drop: The K2 Review 더 케이투

Title: The K2 더 케이투

Language: Korean

Episodes: 16

Release Date: September 23-November 12 2016

Starring: Ji Chang-Wook, Yoona, Song Yoon-A

If you are a Kdrama skeptic, or new to the genre, we highly recommend this drama. The show leans away from the cutesy romance and focuses heavily on its political plot and is filled with action scenes.

Watch our video for a quick version of our Reaction and Review

Synopsis

The plot follows the story of a former soldier (Kim Je-Ha) who is dishonorably discharged from the military. Wanted for committing a military crime, he is constantly in hiding and on the run, until he is caught at the wrong place and the wrong time and becomes a witness that needs to be eliminated. Je-Ha becomes involved with powerful political candidates for whom he becomes a bodyguard. Things become complicated when Je-Ha learns he is the body guard of the presidential candidate’s love child. He becomes conflicted when he struggles to understand whether he is safeguarding or holding the young woman hostage, especially after falling in love with her.

The Trailer

The Plot

I found the plot a little to politically heavy. Without an understanding of Korean government structure, it was difficult to follow what was going on and why certain developments were a big deal.

The politics got boring when the candidates continued to play a back and forth game, each trying to damaged their rival’s public appearance. While it made sense, it just got repetitive after a while.

However, I enjoyed the suspense and mystery aspect (though it was not as compelling as other dramas) as it kept you guessing.

The drama was full of action shots featuring Ji Chang Wook that was full of fantastic stunts. It was nice to see some fights that did not look pathetic (such as the PATHETIC fight between the boys at the amusement park in Accidentally in Love)

The Characters

Related image

http://en.yibada.com/articles/174864/20161122/girls-generation-yoona-k2-ji-chang-wook-recounts.htm

Kim Je-Ha: Great character development. We get a backstory early on in the drama which helps the viewer to get a good sense of his head space. Je-Ha is badass but cute, serious but funny, fighter but gentle, is suffering from PTSD.

Everything he does makes sense. His character is complex and interesting and while he embodies many contradictions- they all make sense. We know where he’s coming from, and we love him.

Image result for the k2 ko anna

http://www.juliaandtania.com/blog/?p=4368

Ko An-Na: Is not a believable character. She is incredibly weak and feeble, except in some rare moments where she shows courage and resourcefulness- but this is rare and only lasts a few minutes. Her character was not well thought through, not consistent and not really well acted. She didn’t deserve Je-Ha though we can see why he fell for her.

Image result for the k2 choi yoo jin
http://www.dramabeans.com/2016/10/the-k2-episode-11/

Choi Yoo-Jin: Is absolutely psychotic. Her character is overacted- her fits are overplayed and ridiculous. Just when the viewer starts to/ wants to respect her, she falls into her psycho personality (like she is schizophrenic or something) one can’t take her seriously. We liked her strong personality that although ruthless and selfish showed a strong woman. Taking this into consideration, we were extremely disappointed that she didn’t actually persue the one thing she wanted- Je-Ha – even though it would have complicated the plot and morally been wrong, she should have expressed her desires.

Overall

I enjoyed the show, and it was really refreshing to get away from the cutesy, cliche packed, over sweet dramas.

I have to compare this drama to Healer, since they are in the same genre and have the same leading actor (Ji Chang-Wook).

While I strongly prefer the character of Je-Ha to that of Healer’s, I found the plot and supporting cast more compelling in Healer.

This Drama makes it to my top 5, but is a FAR cry from top 3 due to its weak characters and plot.
