BTS just released a new song! If your a Kpop fan, you’ll have heard all about it!

A 20 second teaser was put up last week and has had the BTS army on the edge of its seats. The song that was just published today, is no disappointment!

V’s (Taehyung) talent really comes through in this track. V composed the music and lyrics himself and even took the photograph for the single’s cover.

V’s airy voice is accompanied by a piano in this mellow song.

We’ve been listening to it on repeat all day long.

The track is a heartfelt song that will warm you up on this cold January day.

The sound of cold, blowing wind and the subtle crunch of snow is all to familiar to us here in Canada. We especially love these sounds in contrast to Taehyung’s soft voice with the piano keys twinkling.

The lyrics to the song are really beautiful as well. Take a moment to read the lyrics below while you listen to the song.

Here’s the English Translation:

In the street filled with flowers I see you today as well
would it be possible to carry it inside me

I’m putting my feelings in the park after the early morning moon
this song is headed for you
I hear the sound of film is lit up by the moon in the night sky

I still wonder wonder beautiful story
still wonder wonder best part
I still wander wander next story
I want to make you mine

that you missed that moment of time and my heart is sad that it missed
I regret it, I hope [to] have that chance again
I will create a light by gathering the moonlight piece by piece
so please come to my side the same way that you did yesterday

I still wonder wonder beautiful story
still wonder wonder best part
I still wander wander next story
I want to make you mine

I still wonder wonder beautiful story
still wonder wonder best part
I still wander wander next story
I want to make you mine

If you leave, leaving your footprint behind, I will keep that warmth safe
I’ll leave it in black and white

What Does it Mean?

This is a song about memories – those snapshot moments that stay with us forever. If you listen carefully, you will hear the sound of a camera focusing (1:46), and eventually snapping a picture (2:02). As the singer reminisces on fleeting moments, he looks ahead to the future, “wander[ing] [to the] next story”.

If you close your eyes and really listen, you can see Taehyung standing in in a peaceful scene as big snowflakes(notes of the piano) gently fall around him. A camera in hand, V wanders through the winter scene snapping photos, thinking back to favorite memories, looking forward to the possibilities the future holds “I want to make you mine”.

Should his mission fail, the singer urges that his love will still have left her “footprint behind” in the snow, and that he will capture it “leave[ing] it in black and white” – a snapshot in his memory.

We invite to you crank up the volume, and become lost in the calm, snowy scene V paints. Sit back with a hot cup of something and let V warm your heart and serenade you into February.

Best Bibimbap Recipe

As university students, we know better than anyone how easy it is to step up the food game. Tired of KD and ramen? Try this delicious bibimbap recipe!50474504_293845181329389_6813204800302219264_nThis meal is easy to alter as you can use any vegetables and sides you have laying around the house!

Side dishes are staples in Korean cooking. They always seem very daunting in number and complexity when displayed in restaurants and Kdramas. In actuality, most of these side dishes are prepared in large quantities and kept in the fridge to be used as needed, and many aren’t as complex as they look. For those who are not consistently eating Korean food it can be a pain and an extra task to create these numerous side dishes. For this bibimbap recipe, I pulled out some side dishes which are quick and easy to make! I used (Store bought) Kimchi and made:

Spinach Side Dish

Bean Sprout Side Dish

Here’s the Recipe:

ddThe Marinade:

  • 1/2 c brown sugar

  • 1/2 c soy sauce

  • 1/4 c mirin

  • 1/4 c soju or sake

  • 2 tbsp sesame oil

  • 3 green onions

  • 4 cloves of garlic minced

  • 1 kiwi grated (kiwi acts as a natural tenderizer, can be substituted with 1/4 c. pineapple

  • ??? lbs beef (I used about 3 lbs for 3 people and we had leftovers
Marinade 2 hours or overnight. The marinade (minus the beef!!) can be made in advance and refrigerated up to 5 days.

The Sauce

  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp gochujang
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • pinch of pepper

                                 blend, blend blend!

The Vegetables (for 3 people)

Slice the following vegetables and stir fry separately, I used:

  • 1/2 zucchini
  • 1 medium carrot
  • 5 mushrooms (I don’t really like mushrooms so add according to your desire 😉 )

                                    Fry the beef!

Putting the bowl together:

  • warm short grain white rice (I like the sticky rice)
  • fried vegetables
  • beef
  • kimchi (store bought)
  • marinaded spinach side dish (recipe to come)
  • bean sprout side dish

                             drizzle sauce generously!

AND ENJOY!

The Accident

How Did It Start?

If we are completely honest, we once started watching a drama at 3am. We can’t remember what it was, but we do remember being unable to get through the first episode.

After this random introduction, we had no interest in exploring the genre any further. ever.

But a prank war with our housemates would turn this all around.

For efficiency’s sake, there was one housemate who payed for the Netflix and in order to get back at us, he did the most annoying thing ever: he put a parental lock on our Netflix account.

That was when we decided to turn the tables and absolutely ruin the settings on his personal account. We demolished his suggestions and currently watching lists by running children’s programs in the background while we studied. Barbie’s Dreamhouse, Peppa Pig, you name it. As we scrolled through, we noticed an Asian drama section and noting the incredibly cheesy titles and thumbnails, turned them on.

and this is where we got hooked. Before we knew it, our laptops screensavers were shining back at us- but we didn’t notice, cause our eyes were fixed on the TV.

Our First Drama

YUP! we had fallen right into our own trap. We accidentally fell right into the genre and have to this day, never recovered.

So what was it that caught our attention?

The South Korean Drama Noble My Love staring Sung Hoon and Kim Jae-kyung.

You can watch the trailer here:

Pretty cheesy right?

Why Did We Watch It?

So if we thought it was so cheesy, why on earthy did we watch it?

Short Episodes

One definite perk to this TV show is its length. With 15 minute episodes, we had watched several before we could decide whether we liked it or not.

We were slowly drawn into the drama with the many cliffhangers- just when we were starting to get interested, the episode would end which quickly prompted us to continue watching.

We felt less guilty since time was going by slowly- by increments of 15 minutes- and suddenly before we knew it, our afternoon was gone, and we had binged the entire thing.

New Experience

Noble My Love gave us a peak into a new culture which is different from our own.

The style of the show, its plot and filming- even the kdrama cliches (which we all know too well) were new to us and we were fascinated.

While Noble My Love is definately not the best drama out there, we’ve got to give it credit of its own OST sung by Sung Hoon.

Check it out:

We’ll leave our discussion of the TV show itself for another time.
